There are a number of wine zones in Tuscany. Each zone has specific characteristics that have contributed to the distinct tastes each Tuscany wine beholds. The top three Tuscany wine zones are Bolgheri, Chianti Classico and Montalcino.
The Bolgheri wine zone is located in west Tuscany. Super Tuscan wines Sassacaia and Tignanello have originated in this wine zone. The Bolgheri wine zone is also popular for specializing production of red Tuscany wines. These red Tuscans are complete or selected blends of Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties.
The Chianti Classico wine zone is at the heart of central Tuscany. The Chianti Classico wines are produced from the red Sangiovese grape variety. Other varieties of red Sangiovese-based Chianti Classico wines are blended with the grape varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Canaiolo. The most distinct feature of Chianti Classico wines is that these are full-tasting bold wines. They could balance out the richness of well-seasoned foods. The Montalcino wine is at Tuscany’s Siena area. The most well-known product of this region is the Brunello di Montalcino Tuscany wine. This red wine is made from Sangiovese grapes. The southern region of Tuscany is home to another popular white wine, the Bianco di Pitigliano. In the proximate location of Siena, Vernaccia di San Gimignano is produced and is included in the roster of world-renowned white wines.
